Mr James Emanuel (Head of Preparatory Department)

Mr Emanuel’s teaching career began in London, which is also where he grew up. After teaching across Key Stage 2, he relocated to Hertfordshire and has worked as part of Senior Leadership Teams ever since. Mr Emanuel has taught in Key Stage 1 and led Early Years. He has worked in both the state and independent sector and is passionate about making learning memorable for pupils. He believes the opportunities and experiences that young people gain whilst in education should be ambitious and inspiring; thus, the St. Francis’ DREAMS values resonate closely.

Mr Emanuel has a Masters’ Degree in Child Development and a NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship). When he is not at work, he enjoys swimming, tennis and exploring a new city, absorbing all the culture and history it has to offer.

Welcome to The Prep Department

The Prep School welcomes pupils at the beginning of their educational journey, aged 3 months to 11 years old (Year 6), and prepares them for the next phase of their education at the College. The all-through aspect of St. Francis’ is demonstrated by the Prep pupils benefitting from access to the College’s facilities, including the theatre, dining hall, sports facilities, music room, school counsellor, extensive outdoor space and staffing expertise.
Excellent teaching and learning is at the heart of what all staff do. With small class sizes and a focus on the individual child, the school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that aims to stretch and challenge all pupils whilst championing wellbeing. The pupils are taught by specialists in different subject areas, including Latin, Art, Drama, Music and P.E., allowing pupils to be exposed to teachers with extensive subject knowledge and skills.
The Prep School occupies its own buildings on the College campus and provides a safe, nurturing and calm learning environment where pastoral care goes the extra mile. Visitors often remark on the happy and friendly atmosphere of the school, which is demonstrated passionately by our pupils. They are our greatest ambassadors and as one steps into the classrooms, one can sense their love of learning. Pupils enjoy the enrichment opportunities on offer, whether this be the lunchtime clubs, pupil leadership roles or the trips and visits they experience. Our DREAMS values are instilled within each pupil with dedicated curriculum time allotted to foster a growing knowledge and understanding of how to appreciate these in everyday life both in school and beyond.
If you would like to come and have a tour of the Prep School, or learn more about any aspect of life at St Francis’, please do get in touch with us. I would be delighted to introduce you to our school, our teaching and our pupils.
